Help Families in Sierra Leone!

Beyond the deadly toll taken by the virus itself, Ebola has ravaged West Africa’s economies and its cultures. Since the latest outbreak began this summer, schools and markets and agriculture have been suspended indefinitely, and movement of people and commerce has been severely restricted in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

dankawalie-300x200In the latter country alone, more than 6 million people now live under a state of perpetual quarantine.

In its most recent report, the World Bank estimates Ebola could create a $32.6 billion economic drain in affected regions, with risk of severe famine in areas where farming and commerce were curtailed at the height of growing and harvest seasons.

Because of the person-to-person nature of Ebola’s transmission, the epidemic is tearing apart the very fabric of the region’s cultures, where extended family and communal living are the norm, and physical touch is highly valued. In the long term, the fear, mistrust and alienation engendered by the epidemic may very well be as destructive as the illness itself.

Badenya, an international cultural organization founded by writer & educator, Kewulay Kamara, is raising funds to help families in northern Sierra Leone survive the Ebola crisis and its aftermath.

Badenya—literally “Children of One Mother” in the Kuranko language— is a 501(c)(3) community-logo-blue-300x271building organization based in NYC and in Dankawalie—a rural village in the Kabala region of Sierra Leone. This area is the only district in the country that has not yet had a case of Ebola. Yet Kabala remains highly vulnerable to the virus and the economic fall-out of the crisis.

Over the last 26 years, Badenya has succeeded in building a secondary school and a solar power grid in Dankawalie, a reforestation project, and ongoing cultural exchange programs.
