A recent survey of mainstream doctors by Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine, showed that 21% now sell supplements, 36% refer patients to pharmacies to buy them, and 61% refer to health food stores.   Ninety-three percent said their patients had strong interest in supplements/natural products, and 98% said physicians need more education about this aspect of health care.  As former Vitamin Shoppe CEO Tom Tolworthy recently told Nutrition Business Journal, physician recommendations have been a major driver in the recent sales surge for vitamin D, multivitamins, fish oils and probiotics. “We see lots of customers coming in with “prescriptions” from their doctors,” Mr. Tolworthy said.  Simply put, doctors can only recommend or dispense the products and services they know about.
